The recent passing of American master potter and educator, Warren MacKenzie created an opportunity to reflect on his vast influence, just as we did at the beginning of 2018 with Betty Woodman. Each of the artists included in this homage to Warren MacKenzie all have direct or indirect lineages with him and their vessels and wares reflect his legacy.
The 25th annual Claymobile Creations Exhibition showcases student work from The Clay Studio’s community engagement program, the Claymobile. Each year Claymobile students create imaginative wonders under the guidance of our talented teaching artists. The students’ artworks for this year’s exhibition are inspired by the Earth Elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
Extrapolated from his research in Geomythology while traveling for two months in Iceland during the summer of 2018, Surround Silence is an amalgamation of Starin’s experiences and interpretations of the Nordic creation myths as they relate to the unique landscapes that have been formed by glacial and volcanic activity throughout the country. Referencing personal as well as naturally occurring boundaries, shelters, caves and sacred places, works in this exhibition attempt to evidence the slip-stream between reality and fantasy as a means of gaining a higher sensitivity of self and the spaces we inhabit, how they came to be and the importance those phenomena have on our human identities.
