still there.

This porcelain collection is inspired by a parable poem written by my late brother, ernie batiste iv. In its entirety it reads:

the man who climbed the mountain
after he came down, he turned, shielded his eyes against the snow’s reflection and saw that the mountain was still there.

In that poem I see the recognition of the summit, alongside an acceptance that the peak yet looms. In making this work I’ve begun to sit with the mountains I thought had been climbed, on my own, as a community, as a country. I am trying to accept that they are all still there.

Everything but the figure is porcelain with a satin matte white glaze. Though mountains were not conquered, the effort was pure.

I want the objects I create to be as honest as possible. That means leaving some surfaces unglazed to give the holder a way to see and connect with the clay in its most elemental state. It means simple, elegant glaze surfaces that don’t detract from the form, but enhance it.
