Artist Statement
I create functional ceramics that explore the relationship between digital precision and material unpredictability. Using 3D clay printing, I make vessels and lighting that celebrate the visible traces of both the machine and the hand.
My work investigates what happens when a controlled digital model meets an unruly material. Rather than hiding clay's slumping, cracking, and shrinking, I embrace these qualities as evidence of the dialogue between digital intent and the inherent behavior of the material.
Combining CAD modeling, additive manufacturing, mold making, and traditional ceramic techniques, I use digital fabrication to expand—not replace—the language of craft. Through functional objects meant to be held and used, I invite viewers to see precision and imperfection as collaborators in the making of each piece.
Bio
Frankie Iadarola is a Philadelphia-based ceramic artist and educator whose work explores the intersection of digital fabrication and traditional ceramics. They create 3D-printed vessels, lighting, and functional objects that examine the relationship between digital precision and the handmade.
Frankie earned a B.A. in Comparative American Studies from Oberlin College and has received scholarships and residencies from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Craft, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Pocosin Arts, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the John C. Campbell Folk School.
They are the Prototyping & Digital Fabrication Studio Manager at The Clay Studio, where they teach artists to integrate digital tools with traditional ceramic processes.
