Clara Holt is an Italian ceramic artist and illustrator whose distinctive practice brings together ceramics, drawing and storytelling. She primarily works with ceramic vessels and hand-painted tile murals, and is particularly known for her highly detailed sgraffito work, using layers of coloured slips and carefully carved lines to create rich, graphic surfaces.
Her imagery draws from ancient mythology, literature, local folklore, memories and everyday life, intertwining traditional narratives with intimate autobiographical elements and a contemporary visual language. Rather than treating decoration as something separate from the ceramic object, Clara allows form, image and narrative to develop together. Across vessels, tiles and larger ceramic works, every line and detail becomes part of the story.
Following a degree in clinical psychology and twelve years working in corporate television, Clara turned fully to art in 2022. She trained independently in ceramic decoration while studying printmaking at Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, an experience that strongly informed the graphic and illustrative quality of her ceramic surfaces.
She is the founder of Fuoco Blu in Milan and Studio Ardilla in Genoa, two creative spaces dedicated to ceramic practice, teaching and exchange. Alongside her studio work, Clara regularly teaches ceramic decoration and sgraffito internationally and takes part in artist residencies around the world. Immersive experiences from Iceland and Galicia to Sicily and Bali have become an integral part of her practice, introducing new landscapes, materials and visual traditions into her work.

As a ceramic artist, Clara is constantly seeking harmony between form, technique, and material. She experiments with different types of clay and works with natural, wild materials that she collects to achieve unique colors and textures. These materials are combined with glazes and alternative firing techniques, such as woodfiring, to enhance the expressive qualities of her pieces. For Clara, the interaction between the tactile nature of clay and the materials she uses is just as important as the narrative itself.
