Resident Artist - Past

Residence Time: 1986-1991

I earned my BFA in Graphic Design and worked in that field for some years. While living in Australia and Singapore, I began studying ceramics. When I eventually took a course in colored porcelain something clicked for me. Design and dimension, art and function came together to fit my needs.

I’m intrigued with the natural patterns seen in stone, water or the sky and the way they contrast with contrived geometric patterns. I find that with colored clay I can play with designs that allude to nature or objects without being representational. By layering seemingly unrelated patterns in a collage manner, a feeling of depth is created. One piece seems to come forward…another appears to fall back in space. This illusion is altered again when the flat clay slab is formed into a three dimensional shape. The challenge to heighten this illusion is sparked by its endless possibilities (Artist Statement from 1986).
