Angela Humes

Guest Artist - Current

Artist Statment

Angela Humes is a first generation American artist of Palestinian decent, making functional black and white porcelain ceramic art. All of her wheel thrown pieces are hand made and each wears a free-hand drawn Sgraffito and carved design inspired by her heritage.

Artist Biography

Angela Humes graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in photography and a concentration in ceramics in 2012. Humes started as a black and white analog photographer. When the world switched to digital, Humes switched to the ceramic medium but kept the black and white. Her work reflects her Palestinian heritage. Growing up, she saw so much vibrant artwork of her culture from visiting the houses of her family. She remembers looking at all the lavish decorations painting every surface of their homes, the hand woven rugs, tapestries, sculptures, paintings, lanterns, ceramic art and even their clothing filled with intricate design and pattern. It must have sunk in as it inherently and intuitively comes out in her artwork.

Angie's past statement from her time as an associate artist:

What I found to be most memorable about TCS were the people there. TCS is filled with warm, lovely, talented artists that want to support each other in efforts to grow as an artistic community.

After I left TCS, I started teaching adult ceramic classes at Cheltenham Center for the Arts. I am also their kiln tech. I have built a studio in my apartment where I focus on creating my own work as well as commissions.
