The Clay Studio Residency has been a unicorn in the periphery of my life for many years and for all of the obvious reasons. The space, the time, and the vibrant community are what it represents to me and are what I am after. I’ve learned that I work best in a community and not in a vacuum. I have a new body of work that I have been hashing out lately that I am excited about, though I am aware of the cliché in that every artist has a new body of work that they are excited about. Nevertheless, I know very well the possibilities that The Clay Studio provides and I am thrilled to be accepted into the residency program.
Philadelphia native Theo Uliano earned his MFA in Ceramics from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, after earning his BFA in ceramics from Kutztown University. He was named as an Emerging Artist in Ceramics Monthly magazine in 2015 and has exhibited his ceramic work across the US and abroad. Former maintenance man, studio technician, and itinerant adjunct professor, Uliano currently teaches ceramics at Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. while keeping his studio at home in suburban Philadelphia. He is an artist, teacher, and occasional ditch-digger.
