Shoko Teruyama

In the Bonovitz Space

September 6 through September 29, 2013

Japanese artist Shoko Teruyama’s hand-built boxes, bowls, vases and serving pieces are inspired by sacred spaces and ceremonial objects and made of earthenware with white slip and sgraffito decoration. Her work is whimsical, but reveals itself to be something more devious and interesting. “I create characters based on human relations and things I have experienced,” says Teruyama. “To me it is much easier to draw owls than humans.”

Learn about the artist and her process through an interview posted on Ceramic Arts Daily.
